Why Many Aussie Workers Are Eyeing Job Changes This Year

It seems like a lot of Aussie workers are thinking about making a change this year—whether it's switching jobs or even moving to a new state. According to a survey by recruitment specialists Robert Walters, 56% of employees are considering relocating in the next 12 months, with 54% of them willing to move interstate. But interestingly, only 36% of employers expect this shift.

So, why are so many workers considering a move? Well, the top reasons include the chance for a higher salary (48%), better job opportunities (22%), and a lower cost of living (13%). A good work-life balance also came up as a factor for 13% of respondents.

Robert Walters Australia and New Zealand CEO, Shay Peters, pointed out that businesses seem a bit out of touch with the needs of their employees. He believes that to keep talent, companies need to better understand what employees expect, especially as cost of living pressures continue to rise. For many, cities like Sydney and Melbourne, with their high salaries, are becoming less appealing because of the expensive lifestyle.

Cities like Brisbane and Perth are looking more attractive now, thanks to a more affordable cost of living and less congestion. But don’t count out Sydney and Melbourne just yet—they still have their appeal with potential for higher salaries and job prospects.

The survey also revealed that a significant portion of Kiwis—42%—are looking to move to Australia, while only 2% of Aussies are considering a move to New Zealand.

This trend of relocation could become more common in the coming years, and Peters advises businesses to offer relocation packages, flexible work policies, and competitive salaries to stay ahead in the competitive talent market.
