102 snakes found in a Sydney Backyard

A Sydney snake catcher got way more than he bargained for when he was called out to check a mulch pile in the city's west.

The team at Reptile Relocation Sydney had been asked to remove a few red-bellied black snakes spotted slithering in and out of a woodpile in Horsley Park. The homeowners had seen a couple of them over the past two weeks, which isn’t unusual—especially since female snakes sometimes gather in the same spot to give birth.

What They Expected vs. What They Found

Snake catcher Dylan figured he’d be dealing with about four snakes. But within minutes of digging around, he realized this was no ordinary job.

"Snake after snake, they just kept being uncovered," the team wrote on Facebook.

By the end of it, Dylan had pulled out a jaw-dropping 102 snakes—including 97 baby red-bellied black snakes and five adults.

Yep, 102 snakes. Let that sink in.

How Dangerous Are Red-Bellied Black Snakes?

While these snakes are venomous, they’re generally not aggressive unless provoked. Bites do happen, but fatalities are extremely rare—though that doesn’t mean you should try to handle one (let alone 100!).

The best move? Call a professional snake catcher if you ever find one hanging around your backyard. Because as this story proves, you never know how many might be hiding beneath the surface!
