Get ready for a “wet and stormy weekend,” with severe storms and heavy rain expected across multiple states in the coming days.
Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury from the Bureau of Meteorology said yesterday’s heavy rain in Queensland and New South Wales is just the beginning, and other states can expect more moisture and storms too.
Yesterday, storms and showers rolled through inland Queensland, eastern NSW, far eastern Victoria, and northern Tasmania. Queensland saw rainfall of up to 55mm, while parts of NSW experienced intense falls of 40–60mm in just half an hour, causing flash flooding in some areas.
Today, a thick cloud band stretching across eastern Australia is bringing humidity, scattered rain, and thunderstorms. Inland Queensland will see most of the action, while Brisbane might get a shower or two. In NSW, Sydney and surrounding regions, including the Central Coast and Hunter areas, are bracing for widespread rain, thunderstorms, and even flash flooding.
Victoria could see isolated storms in the north and east, with some rain lingering in Melbourne this morning.
Looking ahead to Saturday, another surge of moisture will fuel more rain and storms across NSW, Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia. Storms are possible in all state capitals and Canberra.
Bradbury also noted there won’t be much relief from the wet weather until early next week. So, keep your umbrellas handy, and stay safe out there!
