Sri Lankan Man Accused of Sexual Assault on International Flight.

A Sri Lankan man appeared in Broadmeadows Magistrates Court today, December 19, 2024, after being charged with allegedly committing an act of indecency during an international flight.

The incident reportedly occurred on a flight from Sri Lanka to Melbourne yesterday. The AFP alleges the 41-year-old man acted indecently toward a female passenger, who immediately alerted airline staff. The crew informed the AFP, prompting action upon the plane's arrival at Melbourne Airport.

Officers conducted interviews with passengers and airline staff and subsequently charged the man under the Crimes Act 1900 (ACT) and the Crimes (Aviation) Act 1991 (Cth). The offence carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

The accused was granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on January 9, 2025.

Detective Superintendent Stephen Cook from the AFP emphasized the importance of safety and respect for all travelers.

"Everyone has the right to feel safe while traveling. The AFP has zero tolerance for inappropriate or offensive behavior, including on flights," Det-Supt Cook said.

He reminded the public that Australian law applies in airports and aboard aircraft, and the AFP will act wherever there is evidence of criminal conduct.

The AFP continues to work closely with airport staff and aviation partners to ensure traveler safety. To report an incident or request assistance at an airport, travelers can contact the AFP’s Airport Watch hotline at 131 AFP (131 237).
