As kids across Australia head back to school, drivers are being reminded to stick to school zone speed limits to keep everyone safe.
Public schools in Queensland and South Australia reopened today, with Victoria and the Northern Territory following tomorrow. Other states and territories will see kids back in class by February 13.
Acting Chief Superintendent Gareth Channells from Queensland Police emphasized the importance of slowing down and staying alert on the roads.
“Drivers need to remember that school zones are back. Pay attention, be courteous, and ensure everyone gets to and from school safely,” he told.
Police in Queensland are running targeted operations in school zones this week, focusing on speeding, distracted driving, and proper use of drop-off zones. Channells added, “Please follow the directions of school staff and crossing supervisors to keep our kids safe.”
South Australian authorities echoed the message, urging drivers to be patient and cautious around school zones. Superintendent Shane Johnson from SA Police reminded everyone to stick to speed limits, respect crossing monitors, and watch out for kids walking or cycling near schools.
He added a reminder for pedestrians: “Use designated crossings and always stop, look, listen, and think before stepping onto the road.”
