Sydney and parts of NSW are in for a soggy week as showers and thunderstorms roll in, marking a cooler start to the work year after the New Year heatwave. Temperatures are set to drop significantly, with highs of just 24 degrees today and tomorrow—about ten degrees cooler than the weekend.
Dean Narrmore, a meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), warns that some storms could turn severe. The rain will stick around for most of the week, though things might warm up slightly by the weekend, hitting 29 degrees.
Over in south-western Western Australia, storms are also expected, but with a heightened risk of bushfires. "There could be severe storms and elevated fire dangers," Narrmore said. A fire warning is in effect for several areas, including Midwest Inland and Karroun, as hot, dry conditions combine with gusty winds.
Meanwhile, the tropical Far North and the Top End are seeing their fair share of storms, with more on the horizon. Queensland’s inland areas are baking, with temperatures around Birdsville soaring to a sweltering 43 degrees. Brisbane is expected to get some rain starting Wednesday, which will likely stick around through the weekend.
In contrast, Adelaide and Melbourne are enjoying sunny skies this week, with temperatures comfortably reaching the low 30s. It’s a mixed bag of weather across the country, so whether you're reaching for an umbrella or sunscreen, be prepared!
