NSW is feeling the heat today, with temperatures soaring close to 40 degrees—and it's only going to get hotter before relief arrives.
By midday, Sydney Airport hit 38.5 degrees, while Sydney Harbour clocked in at 39 degrees. The real scorcher is expected this afternoon, with Penrith forecasted to reach a sizzling 42 degrees by 2 pm. Other suburbs like Blacktown, Parramatta, and Campbelltown aren’t far behind, with highs of 41 degrees. Bondi Beach, surprisingly, is the coolest spot in Sydney today, topping out at 36 degrees.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Sarah Scully assured that cooler weather is on its way later today, thanks to a southerly change sweeping up the east coast. But it’s not all good news—this cool change could bring damaging winds, thunderstorms, and even large hail. Gusts of up to 90 km/h are expected in areas like Sydney, the Hunter Coast, and the Illawarra region.
The intense heat isn’t confined to Sydney. Regional NSW is also in the thick of it, with Dubbo sweltering at 42 degrees and Forbes even hotter at 43 degrees. Newcastle and the Central Coast will see highs of 38 degrees, while Wollongong is looking at a relatively "cool" 34 degrees.
This extreme heatwave moved up from Victoria and Tasmania over the past two days and is now centered on NSW. Severe heatwave conditions are expected in areas like Camden, Bourke, Richmond, and Tamworth, with some relief likely by tomorrow as the heat shifts further north, bringing a welcome drop in temperatures across NSW, Victoria, and South Australia.
Stay cool, stay safe, and keep an eye out for any severe weather warnings in your area!
