Get ready, Australia—this summer is shaping up to be a scorcher, with hot, humid, and wet weather on the way. The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest forecast predicts above-average temperatures for much of the country over the next few months, along with plenty of rain in certain areas.
From December through February, most states and territories are set to experience warmer-than-usual days and nights. On top of that, higher-than-average rainfall is expected in parts of eastern and northwestern Australia, including the Cape York Peninsula, southern New South Wales, eastern Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and northern Western Australia.
December looks like the wettest month of the season, so keep those umbrellas handy. The bureau reports a strong chance of above-average rainfall for the month. January, however, is expected to have rainfall levels more in line with usual summer averages.
Temperatures are also expected to climb significantly, with the odds of unusually high minimums over four times greater than normal. South-eastern South Australia, western Victoria, Tasmania, and western Western Australia are bracing for some particularly hot days. While heat records remain safe for now, forecasters say we could be getting close to them by late December.
In the short term, eastern states are in for a dose of summer heat this week. Melbourne is set to hit 33°C on Friday, with Sydney expecting the same on Saturday. Brisbane will be humid and wet, with a high of 30°C today.
So whether it’s heat, humidity, or rain, summer 2024 is bringing a bit of everything. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on the forecast!
