Australia’s Population Rises to 27.2 Million Amid Slower Migration Rates.

Australia's population has seen a significant boost over the past year, growing by around 500,000 people. According to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the country’s population rose by 2.1%—an increase of 552,000 people—reaching 27.2 million as of June 30, 2024.

This growth follows Australia hitting the 27-million mark in 2023, thanks to a post-pandemic surge in migration. While overseas migration remains a key factor in population growth, the net arrivals of 666,800 people marked a decline of nearly 90,000 compared to the previous year—a drop of 16.9%.

Natural growth also played its part, with 289,100 births and 182,700 deaths recorded over the year, resulting in a net natural increase of 106,400. This is a slight 3.4% improvement compared to the prior year.

On a state level, Western Australia led the pack with the fastest population growth, followed by Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales. Meanwhile, Tasmania experienced the slowest growth in the 12 months leading up to mid-2024.

These figures paint an interesting picture of Australia’s evolving population trends, with a mix of migration and natural growth driving the numbers.
