Australia's happiest residents have been revealed, and surprisingly, they’re not in Sydney or Melbourne!
According to Great Southern Bank’s latest No Place Like Home Report, Tasmania tops the list, with 54% of its residents saying they’re happy with their living situation. It’s the only state or territory to score above 50%. Megan Keleher, Chief Customer Officer of Great Southern Bank, credits Tasmania’s beauty and lifestyle as key factors for its top spot.
Coming in second is the ACT, home to Canberra, with a 46% satisfaction rate. South Australia secured third place at 43%, showing that lifestyle likely plays a big role in homeowners' happiness.
On the flip side, homeownership appears to be a significant driver of happiness. Over half of Australians who owned their homes outright reported being content, compared to just 27% of long-term renters.
Queensland and Western Australia both landed at 40%, while the Northern Territory and New South Wales each hit a low 36%. Victoria rounded out the list with just 35% of residents happy with their living conditions—the lowest in the nation.
Generationally, baby boomers were the happiest, with 55% contentment, compared to 39% for Gen X, 34% for millennials, and 32% for Gen Z.
So, if you’re looking for a happy home, Tasmania might be calling your name!
