Australia Faces Extremes: 200mm Rainfall for One State as Others Prepare for Heatwave.

Queenslanders, get ready—another mega drenching is on its way, with up to 200mm of rain expected in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for central Queensland, where persistent showers and thunderstorms are set to cause flash flooding over the next 24 hours.

Meteorologist Helen Reid explained that most of the state is in for a soaking today, thanks to slow-moving supercell storms. “The coastal trough is deepening off central Queensland, which will ramp up showers and thunderstorms along the east coast,” she said. The heaviest rain is expected around Queensland’s central coast and Capricornia regions, with areas like Mackay possibly seeing rainfall totals of up to 200mm.

It’s not just the coast that’s on alert—northern Goldfields, upper Flinders, and northern parts of the central west are also bracing for severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours. Charleville, in the south-west, already saw intense rain yesterday, with 68.2mm falling in just one hour. A minor flood warning is now in place for the Warrego River following that flash rainstorm.

Meanwhile, down south, it’s a completely different story. Parts of south-east Australia are sweating it out as strong winds drive temperatures 5-15°C above the November average. Many areas are expected to hit the mid-30s today.

A heatwave warning has been issued for Melbourne’s east Gippsland region, and severe heatwave warnings are expected soon for the Snowy Mountains and NSW’s south coast, extending to Illawarra by Friday. Reid noted that the hot weather will grip South Australia, central and southern NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania over the coming days. Relief is on the way for South Australia and Tasmania by the weekend, but Victoria and southern NSW will have to wait until early next week.
